Dr. Walter Kintsch (Special Lecture sponsored by the Department of
Education & CSLP)

Dr. Kintsch has a long and distinguished career as amongst the foremost
researchers in the field of pyschology concerned with learning and memory.
Dr. Kintsch's presentation will explore ways that people with variying
degrees of prior knowledge can interact with textual material to form a
coherent understanding. Dr. Kintsch and his colleagues have been actively
working on a method of analyzing texts referred to as Latent Semantic
Analysis (LSA). A purpose of LSA is to move us closer to developing a
means of matching texts with different types of readers. In practical
terms, making texts more suitable to learners results in more meaningful
learning and, therefore greater transfer and usefulness of the information
acquired.
