If you are just looking at what I make available on my system you are missing
quite a lot of the activity available in Fidonet.  There are well over 200 
conferences carried by the Fidonet backbone systems plus quite a few that are
transported by other sub networks related to Fidonet most available to anyone
willing to go out and look for a feed.

For example I get about 250 to 300 messages a night alone in our International
Windows conference.  We may not have as many groups as Usenet, but we do move
quite a lot of message traffic arround via dialup connections between systems.
In a major international conference I have seen messages posted and replied 
to from people as far away as Austrailia in as little as 3 days. Not bad 
considering the daisy chain of LD phone calls that are made.
