We've been justifying exorbitant workforce salaries for many, many years now. Not that there's anything wrong with that--labor has a value, and I certainly wouldn't work on the line for less than $25 an hour or so. But don't pretend that the workforce is somehow underpaid. Anyway, the fundamental problem is that GM's productivity sucks. They're carrying around all sorts of dead weight that Ford and Chrysler shed in the 80s--and they have to get rid of it. Course, job cuts are a hard sell when times are good, but look at it this way--getting laid off during a strong economy is a hell of a lot better than being let go when the economy is in the tank. When would you rather be on the job market?
