For example, patents and copyrights, American companies' assets overseas, right of access to foreign markets, money in transit in a wire transfer between banks accounts of a foreign country and a U.S. bank, or bonds issued by the federal government. I don't see how, for example, negotiating American companies' rights to sell goods in Japan is incidental to protecting our freedom, or passing laws that impose tariffs on goods from countries that refuse to crack down on their citizens pirating the intellectual properties of American goods is incidental to protecting our freedom. Even the Gulf War was not fought to protect our freedom, as it would be quite a stretch to say Saddam Hussein threatens the American way of life.
