The electronic countdown on 99.5 FM?

As I was flipping through the FM band a couple days ago ("seek" is a
wonderful thang), I tuned into 99.5. At the time, all that was on
99.5 was some electronic voice counting down from some very large #.
(40,000 or so.) I thought little of it other to berate myself for
not finding any decent tapes in my car and went on to my search for
good music.
Then, just yesterday, I was in a car with another friend and he tuned
it into 99.5 and asked me if I knew what was going on with the electronic
voice doing the countdown. I have *no* idea on this one -- if there's
anyone out there in net.land who has any information, please post or
send email. My curiosity has just been aroused.

my guess is that you won't find good music on 99.5 anymore... They
started the countdown at 70,000 (the voice synthesizer is of very poor
quality... reminded me of the TRS-80 Model I version from circa 1979?)
Thursday at Midnight after spending all Christmas Eve with some hick
(named "Hugh Chardon"... say it out loud) playing the same Garth Brooks
song over and over and over, all day, whilst trying to kill/maim/symbolically
destroy the old station mascot, the "FOX".
My s.o. says that the rumor she heard was that WOWF (99.5's new call
letters) has been bought out by a country station and is going to
be switching to a country format. UGH. Just what we need.
When I drove into work this morning about 3 a.m., the countdown was
at somewhere around 25,000... so I'm guessing it'll hit zero sometime
Monday afternoon/evening....
99... it's not cool anymore and you'll know it.

Speaking as an ex-program director of Top-40 stations for many years... They are getting JUST what they set out to do, get as many people talking about "Whats going on?" as they can before they go live with the NEW product. In this case they are currently carting music and changing formats and all computer programs to reflect the new sound. My hats off to whoever talked a GM of a top 8 market station to pull something this outragous! Keep in mind that "as long as they are talking about you" it doesn't matter if it's good or bad, a very large amount of the people that have been informed of this promo, will indeed sample the new product and judge for themselves. -- destroyer!m-net!kite Public Access Altos 68020 UNIX Sys-III (313) 994-6333 vela!plex-1!root Usenet News Plexus P/35 68000 UNIX SysV.2 663-6207 vela!plex-2!root Usenet News Plexus P/60 68020 UNIX SysV.2 663-6873 -- You can mail Dave Parks at these addresses, or phone (313) 663-2247 --

>be switching to a country format. UGH. Just what we need. I would guess that this is bunk, because they are now playing about a six hour loop of all comedy tape. I *love* it. They just played "Wet Dream" and "Massochism Tango", two of my favorites. Hell, they even played "I bet you they won't play this song on the radio"! I know it's a promo, but they've got me hooked, continuous music for three days with NO commercials! One other reason that I think they're not going country is that one of their station identifications says, "We believe that we are complying with FCC regulations, but some of the material you've been listening to may be offensive to senior citizens. If you are a senior citizen, please tune to W4 country, which plays old time western music." Another one says "...some of our programming may be offensive to children If you are a child, please tune to WLLZ, WRIF, or WHYT, these stations play music that appeals to children." (RIF-disclaimer: I do listen to that one) >isn't cool anymore Oh come on, wasn't the Fox a typical Madonna/Vanilla Ice pablum station? I agree with the guy that said he admires whoever had the guts to do it. They've gone on to playing Julie Brown, followed by Abbott & Costello. Ecstacy!!! - Chad

It's all pretty hillarious (although I've heard "polka dot undies" about 20 times now)! My friend guesses that they're going to talk-radio format. Whatever it is, it'll happen Monday. My car radio hasn't switched to a different station (even 89X!) since Christmas! -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- myke@terminator.rs.itd.umich.edu = usermyke@umichum.bitnet = myke@umich.edu mike@mac.archive.umich.edu = MISTER archive Michael Dautermann - U-M Ann Arbor, Dearborn and, soon.. the world!
