Our budget was released today, and we have some money to upgrade the modems
we have been using on sharkey and mailrus (Telebit TrailBlazer+'s). We'd
like to put one or two modems on destroyer for UUCP use. (I'm not sure
what we'll do then with the old modems; perhaps keep them for other uses
or sell them off.)

Does anyone - especially those that will be dialing in - have a suggestion
as to what we ought to buy? What's a good modem to buy? What's a good
company from which to buy it? If I buy it from company X, will they give
me a good warranty or service contract? Can they give me a cable so that
I can plug it into one of my Sun-4/350 serial ports and it'll work just
fine? The easier it is for me to buy, install, and maintain, the better.

We can spend up to $500 for a modem, and we can buy up to two modems.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Well . . . if you can go $500 each and can only buy two, you might want
to look at the WorldBlazer. I've been pretty happy with mine so far --
it's talked to every v32, v42, and PEP modem I've got access to. At
v42 it easily beats PEP transfers, and supposedly Turbo-PEP will do even
better.

As interactive v32 modems Telebits are only so-so (thus sayeth the guys
at MorningStar, who have tested most modems *extensively*). The win
is that if you only have 2 ports, the WB gives you the widest variety
for those ports.
