SEMiSLUG/Usen*x Meeting: Thursday, October 8, 7:30PM, at the Industrial
Technology Institute. Directions at the bottom.
Sorry for the late notice, I got my wires crossed and thought we were
still ten days away.....
The October Meeting:
o We'll open with the Question Session and Welcome of New People.
o Allen Leibowitz of DEC <allen@det.dec.com> will be talking on
some new security and firewall software from DEC. He sends this
description:
The Screening External Access Link (SEAL) is a service offering from
Digital Equipment Corporation that implements a secure gateway between
private IP networks and the Internet. The SEAL package reflects much
of the experience of the maintainers of Digital's own Internet gateway
(gatekeeper.dec.com and decwrl.dec.com).
The SEAL service implements security policy throughout different levels
of the network using standard hardware and software. Like all good
software it is easy to use and highly configurable :-). Unlike other
simple router-based firewalls, SEAL leaves a very large audit trail.
SEAL is being used by a number of Fortune-100 class corporations for
their world-wide networks.
Allen has been involved with the definition and delivery of this
service. You've probably seen him at other SEMiSLUG meetings both
presenting and attending.
o Last will be followed by the Answer Session and the usual Rumors
and Innuendo.
Administrivia:
The First National Bank of SEMiSLUG continues to do well; assuming the
hat passing for October is like the previous months I'll have been
paid back and we'll put the extra money into better cookies for November
and beyond. Meg Geddes and Joni Dale have teamed up and volunteered
to do a batch of home-made for us if we buy the ingredients; I said
yes.
Future Meetings:
Topics being worked on include a reprise and expansion of the Iterated
Systems fractal stuff, Hewlett-Packard, transputers, a custom microprocesor
talk, security, and Sun.
Topics suggestions and contacts are always welcome.
