Win2K server - EASY QUESTION :-)

Having to choose some hardware for a customer and speaking with some
network specialist, I just have two easy questions for someone currently
using Win 2K server.

1. Having some offers, what does mean "Windows 2K server - 10user
licences" ? Cost is about $1000, does it mean the server is able to work
with 10pc?

2. I was currently using NT4 and made my tape backup with it. Some
resellers send an offer for "Veritas Backup Server PS3.0"; cost about
$700. My customer need backup for two purpose: making backup of data on
server (not on user pc) and eventually making HD-image of user pc. Do I
need this software? Can NT 2K make easy backup on network? Or can I use
some software such "Norton Ghost" to make image disk from network to
some DAT-scsi drive?

Thanks for your GREAT help,
Jrme

The "Windows 2K server - 10 user licenses" means you would purchase the
rights for 10 people to access the Windows 2000 Server. They are client
licenses. In license manager, if you are set to "per server" then those
would be the number (10) that you enter for 'number of users' in the 'per
server' environment.

You can backup with Windows 2000 backup, but Vertias is more robust, and
give you more options. Its what my company uses. With the recent updates,
we have been pleased with its abilities.

As for imaging... Norton Ghost or Drive Image Pro v. 4.0 is what actually
does the imaging of a PC. We use Drive Image Pro 4.0, its really fast. You
should use Sysprep, which is part of windows 2000 to prepare a PC to be
imaged. After Sysprep is done, then you can use DriveImage or Norton Ghost
to create the image.

Read up on Sysprep and Drive Image and Veritas for more information.

after you use sysprep where do you create the image. I have Norton Ghost
and have been very disappointed with how it works. I may be missing
something. I have tried both USB and LPT to a second computer to store the
image, but I could not store the image on an NTFS partition, the image is
nearly as large as the drive, and it took hours.

I actually found it quicker to just install everything on to the
workstations. Is Norton Ghost Enterprise better, does Drive Image work
across a Win 2000 domain?
