Here is some more information.

The list view is an OwnerData style listview, and asks it's parent control
for item information.

I use either LVM_ENSUREVISIBLE, or the equivalent macro, to get item index 3
to show in the list
view.

When I monitor the LVN_GETDISPINFO calls, in which the listview asks it's
parent edit for item information,
the item indexes for which information is requested are as follows:

on form creation:

 0, 3

on creation of the listview:

 3, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5

The listview never requests information for item index 1.

Displayed in the listview are, from top to bottom, indexes:

 0, 3, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5


More questions:

shouldn't the listview request info for item index 1?
shouldn't the listview be 'smart' enought not to display the same item
twice?
