Win95 crashes when use com port in dos box

Does anyone have any idea why, when I use any DOS-based comms program from
within a Win95 DOS-box, Win95 locks up completely. I does not seems
specific to any comms program - I use the DOS Demon software, other old
bulletin board progs (Telix).

This is a pain, as I have to shutdown to DOS everytime I want to collect
mail and news, etc.!

Any ideas anyone?

Possibly because the DOS apps you are running address the hardware
directly and conflict with the Win95 drivers, which expect to have total
control over the ports?

Try deleting any comms ports from control panel/system so that Grim95
doesn't load drivers from them, and thus there is nothing for your DOS
apps to conflict with? (You will have problems if your mouse is serial,
obviously; a PS/2 mouse won't be affected)

Just a thought.

Yeh, I didn't actually say - I still use Win95 for Internet Explorer, AOL,
home-banking, etc. and yes I do indeed have a serial mouse!

It always used to work, I could just open a dos box, run the prog and dial
up no probs.

I will try deleted the devices from Win95, and see if it reinstalls the
drivers or something.

Cheers,

Is that because some (most?) DOS s/w talks directly to the h/w
(unruly) and Win95 doesn't like/allow that?

Hello Scott

If you are using DIS (like me) then it should work in a DOS
window in WIN95 which is how I run it so I can cut and paste.

You didn't say which com Port you use. I understand that
com4 can be a problem with some s3 Video cards.

Sounds like a fair enough theory, but it always used to work "it just
suddenly" stopped, and I've no idea if I've done something, or some game or
other peice of software has overwritten a driver, or what... :-(
