Debugging shell extensions

Some time ago a I read (and didn't save) instructions for debugging
Windows 95/NT4 shell namespace extensions.

Can anyone help.

What I can remember is this:

a) Have your extensions loaded in your IDE, with explorer.exe (I think)
followed by some parameters (which I don't remember)

b) Close down the shell (but not Windows) by bringing up the Shutdown
dialog and then selecting the Shutdown button, but with some combination
of ctrl, shift and or alt keys pressed also put left big toe in right
ear :-)

c) the shell shuts down, only to restart when you tell your IDE to run
(and debug).

Also, how do you restart the shell without rebooting after you've
finished debugging

TIA,

Stephen Walter

You've got the shutdown sequence right ctrl-Alt-Shift and click cancel. You
do this first to stop IE 4 which is the default shell post IE 4 install.
However, any windows apps, ie delphi are still running. You then run your
delphi program and have it's parameters point to your 'IExplore.exe'
wherever windows may have put it. All this is required since delphi cannot
set debug hooks in something that is already running and you want to test
inside of it.

To restart the shell double click on the desktop. This brings up the task
manager from which you can run 'explorer' to restart the shell.

Jeff,

Thanks .. it works like a bought one. One tweak I noticed is that for NT4,
the procedure is the same for shutting down the shell, and only slightly
different for starting it up.

To restart the shell, double-clicking on the desktop didnt bring up the
task manager. This might be NT, or it might be the fact Ive got Novell
running, but in any event, CTRL_ALT_DEL brings up a Novell dialog, one of
the choices of which is to run the Task Manager.
