You may be aware that there is currently a Star Trek Exhibition in the Gas Hall by the Museum and Art Gallary. I went today and thought I'd pass on my comments to help those who may be thinking of going. All of the below is my own feelings and thoughts and all IMHO. Firstly the entrance fee is 3.95ukp for adults, way overcharge for what's offered. There are about 4-5 video screens most of which are showing 2-5 minute trailers with actor interviews and general trailer type speil(sp?) about 'the STAR TREK experience' repeating endlessly. All but one are normal TV size screens, the exception is a very out of focus projection screen (imagine watching a 3d film without the glasses through a dirty window. Most of the trailers are grainy (bad conversion from NTSC probably) and have a very SHOUTY and distorted soundtrack. There is a fairly broad selection of props and costumes on show, in glass cases or behind ropes, althought they do tend to be very poor quality (if they appeared in the series's at all they must have been well towards the extreame of the picture) and mainly original series or films. The general standard of the items is shabby to say the least. When I went there were two manned displayed, the bridge of the original Enterprise (first series, Kirk, Spock, McCoy etc) and a transporter room. The bridge was manned by a man in a Next Generation uniform (ie wrong series) sitting in the captains chair watching people go past. The transporter room did not look much like one from any of the series but at least the man there (also in Next Generation uniform) was explaining how it was supposed to work and how the effects were done and the console made the right sound effects (original series). At the end of the exhibition there is the inevitable shop, although I would say this is the best part of the exhibition. Some shop assistants are wearing Next Generation uniforms which helps add to the ambience. There is a good range of merchandise, from postcards upto uniforms and models and is well worth a visit if you want to fill in holes in your books collection as they seemed to have most of the books, magazines and other stuff. The insult is the man from Bank of Scotland near the door who tries to get you to take out their credit card which has a rather poor picture of the Enterprise 1701-D on it. For the record I am not a trekkie/er although I am a fan of the series (mainly Next Generation and Deep Space 9). On the whole I am disapointed with the exhibition. -- Stephen Booth Technical Analyst. All my own views, not my employers.

These exhibitions are expensive to mount and have to be run as going commercial concerns as traditional museum people do not see them as worthy enough in their own right. Local Authorities have enough problems keeping their existing collections going without being able to 'sub' these events. -- Andy Howell Birmingham, UK.
