If I understand it correctly, since the 1991 collapse of the Communist
regime, anti-Semitic incidents in That Which Used to Be the Soviet
Union have actually increased sharply, essentially having been held in
check under the Communist regime.

All essentially looking at the ugly excesses of anti-Semitism in the
face; Jews have oft been blamed for the collapse of the Soviet Union
and the want of any cohesive effort to get socioeconomic reconstruction
underway, and such is oft reinforced with obscenities, displays of
force and threats of violence.

But then again, questions have been raised as to the sincerity of
numerous TV ministries as love to use "Christian" as a device to
collect funds from especially the weak and impressionable (those of
Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson among them), only to divert the funds
to misguided personal use having nothing to do with Elohim. Such an
appeal as this deserves some close que vive, preferably from the likes
of the Philanthropic Advisory Service of the Better Business Bureau.

In my view, perhaps a more worthy charity in this respect would have to
be United Jewish Appeal (UJA; http://www.uja.org/), who has been
conducting Operation Exodus for the last several years with essentially
the same premise; viz., helping Russian Jews emigrate to Israel or the
United States.

But then again, would you rather that many Russian emigres were of the
Russian Orthodox faith? (This notwithstanding many Russian Orthodox
leaders themselves found to be having known connexions to the Russian
Mafia and extreme right-wing movements in post-Communist Russia, Pamyat
["Memory"] among them, as well as overzealously lurid contempt for Jews
and other religious movements.

(Case in point: Last fall, Patriarch Alexy of Moscow was quoted by the
ITAR-TASS agency as claiming that Western religious missionaries in The
Former Soviet Union, in particular such for the likes of the Mormons,
Jehovah's Witnesses and Baptists, were using "psychadelic drugs" to get
Impressionable Youth to convert as part of mission work.)

On a more enlightening note, I see where a few Russians, Ukrainians and
those from the Baltic republics (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) have
been working summers in Wisconsin Dells in recent years. All quite
interesting people, I will care to admit; in fact, there are a number
of Dells-area motel operators of Ukrainian descent.

Personally, I think a better resource for your donations would have to
be the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), as has a long-established
history of helping Jews immigrate from Eastern Europe and the Former
Soviet Union to Israel and the United States, and help them establish
themselves in their chosen land.

HIAS in this effort.
