I'm really P.Oed now. Pat Robertson is off of Disney and on to
predicting armegeddon over the Y2k problems. He's talking about
food and power shortages and suggesting people stock up for the
year 2000. I can just see little old ladies (without computers)
getting upset over this. What an asshole!

You speak FAR too kindly of Mr. Robertson! The guy needs to be
committed! Where is he from, anyway?

Local fundamentalists in Milwaukee are organizing activity so they can
flee the city and find refuge in suburban churches. "Pastor" Matt
Trewhella, a convicted abortion protest lawbreaker, is leading one
such effort. Part of it is urging people to withdraw their money from
banks at some point before 1/1/00.

There will be chaos if enough people take their money out of banks.

In a very real way, this could be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Our thought for the day, a lesson from history:

A major cause of the fall of the Roman Empire was
the rise of Conservative Capitalism.

Conservative Capitalists bought up land to form large estates.
This destroyed the ancient structure of family farmers having
an interest in good goverment. Worse than that, Capitalists
engaged in "downsizing" and use of "scab" labor: slaves.
The displaced Roman small farmers not only lost their property,
but their livelihood as well. They had no interest in preserving
the empire, which increasingly relied on foreign mercenaries for
its defense. Compounding the problem was the avoidance of taxes
by rich Conservative Capitalists. This emptied the treasury so
that foreign troops could not be paid, and they (the Goths)
finally rebelled and destroyed the Roman government.

Are you a political or religious Conservative?
Remember this: those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.
Pay your taxes and stop complaining.

You've perhaps heard that "virtue is its own reward?" Well, in that vein,
listening to Pat Robertson is its own punishment.

This is what frightens me most about the Y2K problem. If there are enough
reports in the media -- and this is by no means limited to apocalyptic
fanatics -- about how banks are going to crash on January 1, 2000, there
will be a mass withdrawal of funds near the end of December that will
precipitate the crash. Best I can say is that the problem will correct
itself around January 2nd or 3rd when it becomes apparent that the disaster
was caused largely by human beings, not computers. For the rest of us, this
will be a great excuse for paying bills late. <g>
