This is from my hazy memory, but about 10 years ago, residents in house within about 2000 feet of a local landfill started suffering headaches, restless and/ or very deep sleep, nausia, etc. They were checked out by an MD who didn't find anything specific. Sometime later (weeks?) the husband was trying to light a fire in the fireplace on a cold morning, and when he struck the match (it's been 10 years, so I don't remember the exact quote, but it was something like) ". . .A blue ball of fire lept from the match and roared up the chimney. Then, little blue balls of fire started dancing all around the living room. . ". He got his family out safely, but watched as his house burned to the ground. It turned out that the gasious byproduct of organic decay, methane, has seeped horizontally through the earth until it reached his basement, and then permeated the house. Nobody knew why the pilot on his furnace didn't set it off first. Oh, that was the cause of the their "illness" also. I think construction on an adjacent house was terminated, some other nearby residents were forced to leave, and the landfill owner (a city) had to install methane alarms and vents to collect/burnoff the gas. This may not be the exact details, but I was definitely left with the impression that landfills were not wise places to build near.
