A friend is considering buying a house for sale in one particular neighborhood. She's wondering how to find out if there are any plans by various parties to, say, put a highway through the neighborhood, or build public housing down the street, or zone the next block for heavy industry...that sort of thing. I told her I could get her at least a generic answer by querying this newsgroup...How about it? Or...for readers of dc.general, do you have a more specific answer for Washington, D.C., or even more specific, for the Deanwood area?

I told her Well, I don't know that it's the *best* way, but after we bought this house only after having cruised the neighborhood a number of times, I swore that the next time I am thinking of buying a house, I am going to knock on some potential neighbors' doors and ask them what life in the neighborhood is like (without a realtor around, thankyouverymuch) to get a clearer picture before I commit to buy, because that will take a lot less energy than cruising the neighborhood a half-dozen times at different times of the day and night. -- I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much. - Mother Teresa

City Hall. The building department will know about any outstanding permits in the area. You can also go to the town clerks office and look up who owns properties in the area. The cities planning office may know about long term plans that haven't yet gotten permits. Aside from that, read the legal notices section of the newspaper for notice of the agenda of various planning/zoning boards to see what projects are seeking approval.
