From my statistics class many moons ago:  There's a firm long-running
correlation, traceable at least as far back as the American revolution. 
Alcohol consumption in a state is inversely proportional to teacher
salaries in public secondary schools in that state.  While some
speculation about causality is possible, remember what a small
fraction of the public is represented by school teachers.
