Errrr, Huggie, here's a few words of advice from someone who used to work
(indirectly) for the USPS. If you do this, then AOL will _not_ get the
disc back. AOL will _not_ pay the return postage cost, because the disc will
never go anywhere. AOL will _not_ even hear about it. You will accomplish
nothing more than you would by throwing the disc away--except that you'll have
wasted a few seconds of some mail carrier's time.
First-class mail, Priority Mail, and Express Mail include forwarding and
returns for free. If you have moved, the mail will be forwarded to your new
address at no charge, unless the sender has marked DO NOT FORWARD on the mail.
If it can't be delivered, or if you refuse it, it will be returned at no
charge.
Bulk-rate mail _does not_ do this. When you move, bulk-rate mail will
only be forwarded to you for a very limited period of time. After that, if
the sender has marked the piece FORWARDING GUARANTEED, then the piece will
be forwarded to you, and the sender will be charged the extra postage. If
they haven't marked the piece in that way, then it will not be forwarded.
If it's marked RETURN POSTAGE GUARANTEED by the sender, it will be returned
at the sender's expense. If it's not, then the piece is simply dead mail--
it will be thrown away, or sold in bulk by the USPS, or used to test new
machines.
The same sort of thing goes for refusal. If the piece has been marked
RETURN POSTAGE GUARANTEED by the sender, it will be returned at the sender's
expense. If it's not, then it's dead mail--it will not be returned, and the
sender will not be notified. (Even if the piece is marked ADDRESS CORRECTION
REQUESTED, the sender still won't be notified--"refused" isn't a problem
with the address.)
So, if you refuse your AOL CDs in this way, AOL won't even notice; the
CDs I've seen aren't marked for return postage. All you'll do is vaguely
irritate your mail carrier.
