No banks that I know of offer this service in Canada. The only type of
"debit card" is your normal ATM card, and it uses the interac network which
requires pin entry. Cash back is available with this card.

Interac is very well supported by merchants, and is very popular amound
customers. Most banks will give you a certain number of Interac debit
transactions per month (15, 30, unlimited) with your banking plan. Merchants
like it because there is lower transaction fees than credit cards.

In 2001 Interac surpassed cash as the most popular payment method.

Interac is also working on a system to easily "email" funds between
customers of different banks. Helping to further make cheques obsolete.

Having worked in retail, US checkcards are processed as MC or Visa and there
is no cash back option. Unlike the US there is no option on the terminal to
run it as a debit card or credit card. You just swipe the card and the
machine decides what type it is.

If you have a plain US , non Visa / MC branded ATM card, unless it has an
"interac" logo, it will not work in a Canadian point of sale terminal with
pin entry.

However most Canadian ATMs support the Plus and Cirrus networks so you can
withdraw money from an ATM.
