Gift card are a bad idea even when they're for stable companies.
Something like 10% are never redeemed by the recipient.

Gift cards seem to be a popular gift for teachers, and in my area, the
teachers will get together after the last day of school before XMAS to
swap gift cards for ones they want.

At my son's school, the teachers have put up the type of gift cards they
like to receive on their web site.
