That's a 20-20 hindsight issue. At the time, all the facts that would have lead a reasonable jury to realize the foolishness of this case were surpressed by the court. The members of the jury had no clue what the controversy surrounding this case was because the judge said it was not relevant to a federal prosecution. The jurors had no idea that enough of a reason was there to invoke their right of juror nullification.
