Short trips are the worst thing for a muffle (and engine too).  A cold 
engine emits a lot of water vapor -- you have seen the white vapor 
coming from the exhaust of cold cars on a cold day.  That water vapor 
will condense inside of the pipes and muffler.  Once the car has come up 
to operating temperature the moisture evaporates and caused no problem.  
If the engine never reached that temperature, the moisture remains and 
will eventually rust through, ruining the muffler and/or pipes.

Short trips where the engine does not come up to temperature also causes 
harmful deposits to build in the engine oil, can sludge up passages 
leading to EGR system failure, and a whole host of other bad things.
