I work with 35mm film projectors all day long and while they are not dangerously loud I'm in close proximity for hours and I think over the long haul it could be affecting my hearing. The space is small and there is no getting away from them. Active NC in a small headphone as opposed to large sound blocking ear protection which is both overkill and also active NC would be adjustable as I don't want to block the sound entirely as I'm attuned to listening for problems just from the sound of the machine. I do need to put up some sound deadening material on hard surfaces as that would cut the noise back as well.
