Hand-Held Phone Ban Sought By Jo Becker Wednesday, February 5, 2003; Page B09 Maryland lawmakers are considering a ban on driving while using a hand-held cell phone, legislation modeled after a law that took effect in New York state last year. Drivers could use hands-free technology, but those caught chatting on a hand-held device would face a misdemeanor charge and fine of up to $500. The bill, which a House committee debated yesterday, would exempt emergency calls such as those to 911. Supporters cite a recent study by the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis, which estimated that 2,600 deaths each year can be attributed to drivers using cell phones. Though similar bills in Maryland have failed, sponsors said they hope such statistics will help overcome opposition by the cellular industry and some residents. "There are those who are attached to their cell phones that feel that it would impinge on their ability to do business," said Del. Adrienne A. Mandel (D-Montgomery). "I understand that. But we're talking about saving lives." ============================================== http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A26763-2003Feb4.html
