Course Description
The course is structured around 3 components: Coursework; a Thesis or
Project; and Professional Development subjects. The Coursework revolves
around the concept of a cluster. A specialist cluster consists of 4
thematically linked subjects. An elective cluster consists of a selection
of any 4 subjects--- that are not necessarily thematically consistent. All
subjects run for two contact hours per week for two semesters and are taught
in the late afternoon and evening.
The Coursework component consists of a maximum of 3 clusters of subjects (2
specialist clusters and an elective cluster) or a minimum of 2 clusters of
subjects (2 specialist clusters). A part-time student would ordinarily take
one cluster per year. A full-time student would ordinarily take two
clusters per year.
The specialist clusters offered are:
Artificial Intelligence: 4 subjects from
CS012 Artificial Intelligence
CS011 Symbolic Programming Languages
CS010 Mathematical Foundations of AI
CS030 AI-Directed Computer Architectures
CS026 AI Project
Advanced Artificial Intelligence: 4 subjects from
CS020 Computational Linguistics
CS022 Expert Systems
CS025 Current Computing
CS026 AI Project
CS027 Neural Networks
CS030 AI-Directed Computer Architectures
Future Database Systems
CS023 Information Retrieval
CS040 Deductive Databases
CS041 Object-Oriented Database Systems
CS043 Database Project
Advanced Software Engineering: 4 subjects from
CS050 Formal Specification Methods
CS051 Formal Design and Implementation Methods
CS052 Telecommunications Software Engineering
CS053 Software Engineering Project
CS054 Software Project Management
Advanced Graphics: 4 subjects from
CS060 Image Synthesis
CS061 Geometric Modelling
CS062 Advanced Computer Interfaces
CS063 Graphics Project
CS064 Scientific Visualisation
CS065 Computer Animation
CS066 Foundations of Computer Graphics
CS067 Computational Geometry
The elective cluster consists of any 4 subjects from the above that have not
yet been completed. One of the specialist clusters or the elective cluster
can be comprised of a selection of subjects from clusters being offered by
the Departments of Communication and Electrical Engineering,
Business Information Systems or Information Services.
The professional development subjects are drawn from 4 of the following
subjects which are offered as a combination of classes and intensive
workshops on some weekends.
AD031 Project Management
AD032 Managing People
AD033 Managing Organisational Change
AD034 Management Competencies for IT professionals
AC030 Financial Management
SS901 Social Impact of Information
SE260 Social and Technological Systems
SE460 Contract Law & Industrial Relations
The thesis/project component of the degree can be undertaken by a normal
minor thesis/project or an enhanced minor thesis/project. The normal thesis
consists of a semester of research as supervised by a member of the
Department of Computer Science. Students who undertake this thesis must do
2 specialist clusters and the elective cluster and the professional
development component. Subject to approval, students can undertake 2 years
of research by undertaking an enhanced thesis/project. If the student
takes this option, the elective cluster does not need to be taken, and the
student must only complete 2 specialist clusters and the professional
development component.

The University of Melbourne
Master of Arts, Science or Engineering in Cognitive Science by Coursework
General Description
Cognitive Science is a multi-disciplinary area concerned with the
exploration of questions about mind, knowledge, language, perception and
action through the paradigms of experimental methods, logic, and algorithmic
analysis. It is particularly important for its application to Information
Technology. The course is concerned with both the acquisition of Knowledge
Engineering Skills and inquiries into fundamental issues in both Biological
and Machine Knowledge-based Systems. For such reasons, the course combines
topics offered in Computer Science, Linguistics, Philosophy and Psychology.
Course Duration
The equivalent to three semesters of full-time study, which can be taken on
a full or part-time basis.
Entrance Requirements
Eligibility for enrollment in the programme will normally be based on the
candidate having completed an appropriate undergraduate degree in one of the
following areas: Computer Science; Engineering; Linguistics; Mathematics;
Neurosciences; Philosophy; Psychology or other related disciplines.
Students must have some programming experience since the course requires the
learning of specific computational methods associated with the Artificial
Intelligence perspective to Cognitive Science. However, some remedial
preliminary courses can be recommended for students before formally
commencing the programme.
Admission
For admission, an undergraduate degree at a good honours level will normally
be required, or an appropriate qualifying programme of study may be
undertaken. Special consideration will be given to professionals with
adequate industrial/business experience.
Applicants should apply by contacting any of the Faculties of Science, Art
