I don't think you've opened my eyes to a new problem; this is as old
as dirt.  I think extracurricular activities can do a lot to combat
any "anti-intellectual sentiment" students might feel.  In fact, they
can even help students see that it's possible to be smart and cool at
the same time.  Besides exposing the gifted child to lots of new 
experiences.
