Here in Manitoba, A system of identifing DNR patients that are out of Hospital is being developed. As practitioners we wish to have some form of ID attached to the patient so they may be quickly identified instead of family running around looking for documents. Which jurisdictions are using DNR "braclets" or other form of ID that is attached to the patient? Of those areas where they are being used, how are they working out, ie. any problems? Anything else that may be of use to us. Thanks in advance. Dwayne Forsman, EMT-P Manitoba Prehospital Professions Association mppa@magic.mb.ca

Through the sci.med newsgroup, I learned from an MD in southern California that the "advanced directive" about DNR and other issues is attached to the refrigerator and that there was state or county legislation which outlined how the process was to be carried out. Clearly, this issue would have to be studied and input from patient groups as well as health care providers and legislators would be crucial. You might wish to try the sci.med news group or a few other selected newsgroups. In Maryland, A new DNR protocol has been in place for about 2 months
now. It consists of a legal size document which must be signed by a
doctor. This document must be original and is not photocopyable. In
addition to this document, a bracelet must be worn by the patient, which
includes the patient's name, and doctor's name and phone #. If any of
the above is not filled in or present, the document is invalid and EMS
must provide all rescue efforts. If the document is present, supportive
care, such as pain meds, etc. can be given with medical direction.
It seems to work well around here. We've had a problem with public
education regarding the program, but people are slowly catching on. It
should be noted that these documents are the ONLY ones recognized by
Maryland prehospital providers. Hope this helped!

In Maryland, we have a statewide DNR bracelet program. If there isn't a valid DNR bracelet (filled out properly) or the DNR form that the bracelet starts out attached to or an MD standing there giving a DNR order w/ proper credentials we *MUST* start CPR. There used to be what were called Hospice cards that were accepted but they're not valid any longer.
