Vanadyl Sulfate (PROBLEM?)

I recently started having a problem that may or may not be attributed
to Vanadyl Sulfate. I recently started occassionally breaking out in
what looks and feels like a bad sunburn, mainly over my face, arms, chest,
& back, but also in places all over my body. This is only occuring after
a good run or during my workouts. The symptoms last from between 1-2
hours after my workout.

I went to the health clinic here on campus, the first time this occured,
but they were unable to determine what the was cause. At first, I
thought the reaction was caused by a lotion I was recently given to get
rid of another problem, but after the first occurence, I discontinued
its use. But the problem has continued occuring since, usually during
or soon after a workout.

I don't know if it's the Vanadyl Sulfate causing the reaction or
something else, but I've become real warry of it. If it is the VS, I'm
wondering if it may be one of the "other" ingredients the maker, Bricker
Labs, chose to put in it. These "other" ingredients include 20mg Niacin
& 200 mcg Chromium Picolinate (Nutri 21). Maybe even the combination
of the 3 ingredients could somehow cause this, I just don't know. I've
taken the Chromium Picolinate before so doubt if this could be the
culprit.

Anyway, I am now wondering if anyone else is experiencing this same
type of discomfort. I've been getting such good results thus far that
I really don't want to discontinue the VS if I don't have to or can
change something to stop the reactions.

If anybody has any additional info, I would sure be interested in
hearing about it.

If you are taking this on an empty stomach - it could
be the niacin but it sounds like a very small amount to cause
this. At one time years ago I took 500mg. of it and the flush
came on in about 20 minutes. As I recall, this effect should
subside with time. I guess a way to check is to take some
straight niacin under the same conditions that you now take
the VS and see what happens. This is just a shot in the dark
but it may be the cause.

Blake,

I assume you are aware that Niacin can cause flushing. Given that
VS is a vasodilator, I would not be surprised to see the combined
effect cause flushing in some individuals. At least with Niacin, this
is not harmful, although it may be uncomfortable. You may want to
try taking Niacin alone to see if that causes the symptoms. Most
health food stores sell a Niacin supplement fairly inexpensively.
I would not expect 20mg of Niacin to cause a problem by itself, however.

Well, there are 2 problems. The niacin could definitely cause the flushing.
That's a normal reaction of niacin, but 20mg seems pretty small to me.

Is the name of your product called Vanadyl Plus? I specifically know that
Vanadyl Plus has no VS in it. This info came from Muscle Media 2000. They
tested that brand, and it came up with no VS in it.

I also hear that Chromium Picolinate is something that should NOT be taken
with VS because they may be antagonist to each other.

I think that the reaction you are getting is more than likely
what we use to call a niacin rush. The 20mg of niacin is not that
much, but it can be enough to give you that flush. I also have
taken this same supplement put out by Bricker Labs. Although I
think it is a good supplement for chromium piccolinate, I don't think
it should be labeled Vanadyl Sulfate, with only 200mcg of VS. If
you are taking it for the VS, I suggest you switch to SportPharma
brand with 7.5mg of VS per tab.

Interesting coincidence: last night, Leno had some guest who
was describing a bad experience he had, where he was on the floor, breathing
heavy and stuff, etc. - and he found out he was having an allergic reaction
to niacin. Just thought I'd mention it, since before this thread,
I'd never even heard of niacin "flushes".

Niacin in large doses (I don't know how large) has been used as
a cholesterol reducing drug. One unpleasant side effect is
severe flushing of the skin especially on the face and neck.

Just looking at a bottle of multi-vitamins that I take, the old RDA
for Niacin (Niacinamide) is 20mg, so the dosage in your VS supplements
by itself wouldn't seem to be out of line.

You may want to consult a nutritionist or someone knowledgeable about
drug interactions.

MY "freind" (term used loosely here) was apparantly aware
of this problem and slipped me 300 mg of niacin B3 today. I felt like
I had rubbed hot cinnamon oil all over my head and shoulders
for about a half hour. I'm wonering if I'll die quietly in my
sleep tonight. I felt hot all over my body after the tingling effect
went away. I wonder if this would help frostbite victims? Maybe I
should keep a bottle in my snowmobile just-in-case. I didn't consider
myself as a guinea pig, but I guess I am official now. Please don't send
any duct tape.
