I have a three year old 6400/250 power pc mac. I like it, but it is
really slow compared to new ones. I don't know much about computer
hardware. While looking through a mac warehouse magazine, i saw the
accelerator section and looked it over. If I were to get a Sonnet
Crescendo G3/L2 400 mhz 1mb cache and ram doubler software to help my 32
mb ram, what else do i need for great game play and virtual pc game
play? Is this enough? What 3d grafx card can i use with this thing?
will i be able to use the voodoo4 card with my machine? Is it out?
Sorry about my ignorance, but i just got back into computer gaming.
thanks

also, will i be able to run os x, should i wait for it?

My advice is to spend money on RAM before worrying about the CPU. It
makes a massive difference, and RAMDoubler/Virtual Memory don't help a
lot. Level 2 cache is also a cheap way of nudging the CPU speed along.

         Matthew.

I have a 6500/225, which is pretty similar to what you have. You need
to put as much physical RAM in the machine as possible. Mine came with
64 MB; I now have 128 MB and that seems to be plenty for anything I
need to do with it.

I have the Newer G3/L2 300 mHz 1 mb upgrade and am well-satisfied. I
get quite a few random crashes, but I'm convinced that's because of
some wayward extension conflict that I haven't had time to track down
yet. I'm sure a clean install of OS 8.6 will cure things, but I just
haven't gotten around to it yet. My brother has a 6500/275 and he put
a Sonnet 300 mHz upgrade in his. He's satisfied, too.

I don't know anything about gaming, but I know that Virtual PC or the
new version of SoftWindows won't be suitable. Emulation just doesn't
cut it when it comes to processor-intensive gaming. If you want to go
the PC gaming route, best to hold your nose and get a PC.

I'm not positive, but I understand that OS X will require a native G3
processor. That means that those of us with upgrades are left out. In
this case, I don't know that I mind terribly. I still haven't upgraded
to OS 9 and have yet to see a compelling reason to do so.
