Hi, I need to buy a new monitor for my computer. My needs are the following:- -Linux OS (x86 processor) -Mainly used for programming & viewing web pages; very rarely games -Want to look after my eyes as much as possible -Long periods of looking at screen (program code, etc) should not hurt my eyes My budget is $A1000, and size restricts me to a 17" CRT screen. (obviously bigger for LCD, however lacking $$ for bigger LCD) Is LCD better than CRT for my requirements? Which brands should I look for? Will I need a new video card? (currently have nvidia TNT) are there any online reviews about these topics? thanks in advance, Rob

I can look all day at my NEC notebook screen and not strain my eyes. Not so with my 17" Sony monitor. I put a UV screen on it and the tolerance improved but not as much as the notebook's screen.... So, I went along to HN to buy a LCD screen and discovered the Viewmaster 17" or 19" (not sure which) for $2500 was shocking to look at! Like you, when I find what I want I'll buy it but it sure as hell ain't a Viewmaster LCD. We have a 15"(I think) Sony LCD screen at work and its a dream on the eyes. After using it for 1/2 hour I go back to my screen and my eyes hate me :) Brent In article <lxjS7.7499$_z.15101@news-server.bigpond.net.au>, alienjones@the.blue.dog says... > I can look all day at my NEC notebook screen and not strain my eyes. > Not so with my 17" Sony monitor. (currently have nvidia TNT) My wife has a Laptop (LCD screen), and the radiation output as opposed to a CRT is next to none, Power usage I believe is alot less and is less straining to the eyes as unlike a CRT, the LCD doesnt induce flickering that is detectable by the brain. --- This message is certified Virus Free. I think the answer is easy: buy the largest LCD you can afford. Don't worry, it won't be larger than 17". Here we use 15's and 20's all NEC's. They are absolutely beautiful, but very expensive. Once you try a decent LCD, you'll never go back. So for me that restricts it to Philips, Sony or Mitsubishi. And I go for the more expensive model too, there are usually two in each size with Mitsubishi and Philips. Just got a Mitsubishi DV19NF, lovely monitor that appears to be being run out as its due for replacement. > Will I need a new video card? Rob, regardless of what brand screen you get, you really should consider a DVI video card. Driving an LCD with an analog signal can produce a crap picture on an otherwise perfectly crisp LCD monitor using DVI. Trust me, I've been there done that! I was very impressed with the samsung I saw.. the LG was horrible.. maybe it wasn't set up corretly (after fiddling with brightness, it was still too dull) I'm thinking of a samsung. Rob

So what about sharing this bargain with the rest of us? $300 is the price of a 17 CRT which unlike LCD is measured to the tube perimiter so a 15" LCD is really a 16" CRT size. -- AlienJones, Writer of the last FAQ, "John @ Trebutech" <spam @trebutech.com> wrote in message news:9vd11j$ef6dk$1@ID-106644.news.dfncis.de... : : "L. Absolutely. For a better explanation refer to Brian Livingston's columns in the last couple of issues of "Info World". He talks about using some software to adjust "phase" of those monitors to compensate for the AD converters. My experience is that DVI cards simply don't have that problem. Bright, sharp, contrasty image. Look on some web sites like Outback, PCNation or even Dell. This week Dell had a 17" Dell LCD monitor for $799.00 with free shipping (I think), had good spec. Look for a LCD with 400:1 contrast and at least 250-300 brightness. You will see some low priced units with contrast of 250:1, avoid. -- boxdan476 "Keep the 40 acres.
