Hello everyone;

I have been lurking in the shadows of this echo for some time now,
and I have even answered a few posts directly. Now I think it is
time to come out of the shadows to say hello to everyone and to ask
my first question.

I am 29 years old and partially sighted. I have always walked a
fine line between working "normally" in the sighted world and
having to find alternate ways of doing things to compensate for my
low vision in doing my studies/work.

In September of 1991 I completed a Ph.D. in chemistry. Since this
time I have been working in another laboratory doing research here
at Purdue University in Indiana. My problem is that this type of
profession requires a great deal of reading and skimming of
literature. I find that I am having difficulty keeping up with
this ever increasing reading load. I have tried readers in the
past, but it is very difficult to get people that have the
technical background needed to read such materials. I would
greatly like to hear from others with similar reading
loads/professions to find out how you have met this challenge.

Sincerely;

    Mike
