Fellow Internet Users,
As a group of Engineering Students at National University
Singapore, we seek your support and assistance in providing us with your
views on the project that we are doing. The project aims to design and
market a voice activated device that will act as a keyboard substitute
to the personal computer. This is to enable the severely physically
handicapped person (restricted to a single movement) to access the computer.
We are particularly interested in seeking your views, through the
following questionnaire, on the commercial viability of this project.
We hope that this product will give the physically
handicapped a better life. Thank You.

Hello,
I'm having a problem with some new programs {games :> } which reguire
the right mouse button to be clicked for a few functions. I use a
HeadMaster mouse which is a headset with a mouth tube you puff into
to activate the the left mouse button. This works great for 90% of
program functions but lately I've needed to click the right mouse
button and been out of luck. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas
where I could designate an other keyboard key or perhaps a double
click of the left mouse clicker to act as the right mouse button.
I'm using a 486dx pc with the mouse hooked up the serial port com 1.
My computer originally came with a PS/2 mouse but the head set hooks
up to a serial port so I disconnected that and installed Microsofts
latest mouse drivers.{original was Logitec} I don't know if maybe
both could by installed with the original mouse just left stationary
out front so I could push it's right button when needed?.
I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks
Sincerely,
Pat Mahon

My main area of studies is -or has been- the youth experienced by both normal
youth and disabled youth. I'm myself a CP (in the middle ages) so this area
interests me both subjectively and a theme of studies. So if you see this
important, please tell something of aging experiences (change of syndromes,
psychological stresses or social changes, -what ever occurs to your mind.)
- This is just a sketch of research; I don't know if anyone see this worthy
of doing, and the plan of study depends on what you tell including all
experiences of interests of your. (From human relationship to official
business, and rehabilitation to vocational career)
I also seek a co-researchers.

A Sketch of A Study
If my career as a researcher continues, I'd like to set up the
study described Below.
The temporary title: Aging as The Cp- or Multiple Disabled Person
The Background of the Study
As usual, all my ideas of themes of studies grow up from myself.
It means that they are in most cases associated to my
experiences, problems and social and psychological or physic
status. Moreover, because I am not particularly a theoretically
oriented researcher, but field researcher, I have found it
frustrating to establish the research without subjective
motivation and direct connection to the field, regardless if the
results of studies are useful or possible to apply in some form,
although I hope it.
The real motivation for this project is quite subjective. I have
found more or less physical reasons, which may have caused my low
self esteem and difficulties to motivate myself to do certain
things. For example, I have wondered why the reading as a hobby
and a part of work is so difficult or why I have difficulties in
keeping fit by the means which I have accustomed to. I have come
the conclusion, that there is some physical changes which reflect
to my psychological and social activities.
For example, my skills of moving is weakened -at least I feel
reducing motivation of the training. Another example: I have
liked reading and drawing but now I get soon tired and give up
the reading. As for drawing, I do not find any inspiration to
create even a drawing just spontaneously, as told below.
I have wondered these things and I think that the reason of the
changes is associated to the process of aging. It means that the
certain syndromes begin to dominate the physical fitness, which
more or less indirectly gradually change behavioural patterns,
skills to handle things or coping with environmental changes or
circumstances. This all is perhaps including to the normal aging
process, but I have experienced it more rapid, so that I have not
time to accept or adopt the changes. After thinking the possible
causes of the changes and attempts to return to the earlier
activities, I found out that some activities cause almost
unconscious pain or disappointment. Then I analyzed my physical
fitness. The circulation and ventilation seemed to be rather
good, so I don't suffer primarily of the deprivation of supplies
needed for keep up the activity in any area of the behaviour.
Next, I began to analyze with the help of physiotherapists the
changes of my muscular system. The result was that it was all
right. No essential changes in muscular responding or tonus were
found. (I must say that the therapists hardly knew that I drew
these conclusions, although we discussed things). We also checked
the condition of bone structure and limbs finding very radical
and abnormally rapid changes especially in the area of neck.
there appeared to be scoliosis and other changes including
position changes of vertebre, which obviously caused almost
unconscious pain and tendency to avoid such positions which cause
syndromes. I then thought that I unconsciously avoid certain
activities: The pain was suppressed and converted to feelings of
nervousness or tiredness and this was a kind of a "message" from
"flesh to brain" to stop the stressful or damageous activity.
I began think the nature of aging process: I considered it as
problematic process in cases of disabled, but never thought it
further. When I had to enter these physical changes myself I put
them together the psychological facts: I felt frustrated,
disappointed, depressive and tired to almost all what I used to
do.
I felt I needed some "therapeutic" activity. As I had lost almost
all interests in the social life -for I felt it frustrating for
the speech disorders, which I grew conscious after an accident,
where I hurt my teeth and tongue, I tried to return my artistic
hobby, to begin drawing and painting again. I, however, found it
difficult. Nothing inspirited me, and I thought it was caused by
the non-stimulative surroundings; Jyv{skyl{ is a town where all
the green is covered by concrete opposite many other towns. But
when analyzed the reasons of inability to actualize myself
through art, I found that I had very seldom a pen at hands
quickly, contrary to the times when I really made drawings and
such things. When I put later this note into the context of
activities, I found I type almost all longer texts. This made me
accuse the typewriter and computers and other mechanical aids of
losing capability to be creative, and pens and paper had lost
their importance to me.
Later, when I demonstrated this in context of aging, being
conscious of the "hidden" pain and other things mentioned above,
I interpreted this as an escape-pattern behaviour; I simply put
pens away.
The same pattern dominated my attempts to read novels, but not as
directly as in the art. First I thought that there was something
wrong in my eyes, then I found that I had underestimated or
denied the difficulties I met in studies. I saw my unwillingness
to read as a result of suppressed negative experiences or
negative feedback from the stressful period of studies. This may
be true enough to be right interpretation, because I often read
when nothing else demand attention; I, however, live alone, so
that I must do some homework which takes all my energy, but if
there isn't no stress, and the book isn't associated with either
work or studies, I like reading. Anyway, I must choose the
position carefully to be able to read for the athetoid syndromes.
The problem of aging aroused actually when I started jogging. I
felt my body control weaken because of the weight, so I tried to
have some training and exercises to reduce the weight. Note that
I had at least one exercise in week conducted by the
physiotherapist including the muscle co-ordination trainings and
power achieving for back and hands etc. and voluntary volley ball
for disabled and badminton or ligthter form of gyms weekly. So I
in fact think I'm in good fit except the little overweight.
Anyway, although I could pretty easily jog and run without
becoming breathless, I felt it ambivalent: I enjoyed running but
also vague pain caused not by the exercise. The final point was
swimming: I expected I feel something negative, because it was
long ago when I had swam, having even then some vague negative
emotions -perhaps frustration for I could swim as long as before.
Now my left hand was very weak (I knew that it is, because it was
diagnosed to have "active" constant flammation in articulation).
This made me troubled -as the other thing above. I have to
understand the aging process of disabled, especially the
CP-disabled.
As I told, I'm not particularly theorist, but field research -or
survey analyst. It means, that I need rather information directly
from the individuals who are the target group. Additionally, the
importance or my interest in this study is based on my
experiences and needs to find some advice for future; that's why
I define this study -if it is possible to do -as "therapeutic".
It would help me to understand myself through the experiences of
others. And I think the study would give quite a valuable
knowledge about the aging as the CP - or Multiple disabled
persons.
The Set of Study
I try to collect information of aging experiences by the network
called "alt.support.cerebral-palsy" or at this moment C-palsy
list. It is available by the Jyv{skyl{ university Computing
centre, and I have subscribed in it on 1994, June.
I sent the next self analysis as a frametext, asking if anyone is
interested the study. Most of the members were interested.
I think it's time to introduce. I'm a Finnish 42 year old man.
I'm the athetoid CP. I move independently, but have more or less
difficulties in some minor tasks. Perhaps the difficulties are
a result of the aging, perhaps not. But sure some connection bet-
ween the aging and the change of syndromes exists. I feel more
pain and difficulties to control muscles than earlier. I think it
partly is a result of weight and length.
Well, I attended the normal schools, graduating 12 years ago. I
got the degree of M.A. in Social sciences, and since then worked
as a part time researcher at Jyvaskyla University, Finland. Befo-
re it, I worked as a social therapist among other temporary jobs.
I studied social policy, sociology, psychology, special education
... and specialized gradually to study the youth. You may guess
I needed support and help of my co-students. I'm grateful of
their
social support and open minded attitude to me. However, studies
took too much energy and I hadn't time to date seriously -or not
at all. I think I never achieved enough social skills to
establish
a constant relationship. So I remained as a bachelor.
Although my career has been a "success" compared to other
disabled, I feel some frustration and disappointment. I think it
is normal at the middle ages, but also some delay of the
socialization.
The real shock was my father's death. He's been dead 23 years,
but I haven't recovered from it. His supporting and courageous
attitude was what I still need. Fortunately, I have a sister whom
I love much.
I however feel to need something significant to fulfil my life: I
don't exactly know what that might be, but I gradually grew
conscious of it.
My original roots are in Southern coast of Finland, but because
of
very limited possibilities of disabled to get job, I live here in
Mid Finland. -You may think I have strong self-esteem. Wrong!
Although I have published some meritorious studies, having
experienced many things that most of (Finnish) disabled people
never dream, I feel something missing. My nature has also
changed: I'm no longer as ready to be spontaneous or trying to
find my physical or psychological limits. It isn't just the
normal middle age; there are some changes in social life or the
nature of society, which effect to my activity and initiative.
This all made me to sketch the study of aging as cp.
Hopefully my English is good enough so that you understand me.
I've travelled pretty much (also in England), so I dare to use
English very easily and perhaps too carelessly.
Well, this is all this time; you can ask me things you want to
know. Unfortunately, I don't know medical English or any special
English.
What I expect of you, is that you discuss the things associated
on
the sketch "aging process" or tell me your thoughts, conditions
etc. and allow me to write the report of them.
Jukka
Before this I, however send an other message to explain the idea
and "test" if anyone is interested. It is like this.
