<U19807@uicvm.uic.edu> writes: Aside from the fact that "and confused are they all" is an utterly ungrammatical phrase.... Strictly speaking, the phrase above is grammatically correct, but awkward. In article <C0IL3K.3KG@ddsw1.mcs.com>, arf@ddsw1.mcs.com (Jack Schmidling) defends himself: I like it and whether or not it is "ungrammatical", it is proper English. A sentence that is grammatically incorrect cannot possibly be proper English, by definition. f_gautjw@ccsvax.sfasu.edu writes: It is strange how Jack's "ungrammatical" sentence structure is found over and over again in Louis Lamour's novels. Not so strange considering both are writing fiction! Of course Lamour was one of the best selling authors we have ever had. A title previously held by Mickey Spillane. The American people seem to like this "pretentious" style since Lamour sold how many books?... 64 million? Not to mention that he is required reading in how many universities? [oops, pardon my lack of proper grammar]. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your grammar. I believe the punctuation is not quite correct, but the ideas come across simply and clearly. Why is it that when people run short on logic they start nitpicking grammar and typooooos? The topic under discussion here is American culture and its roots. As Mr. Schmidling has set himself up as a defender of pure American culture against the incursions of alien elements, it seems only fair to question his credentials. In other words, it is no wonder that Mr. Schmidling has trouble with other cultures as he has more than enough trouble with his own! Harry Katz
