Well, actually they could regulate school food and they do. If the schools
are public schools, the government running them has every right to decide
what to serve the students. They could not, however, ban food the child's
parents packed in a bag lunch (except perhaps alcohol). My school in
Texas had the weirdest rule; we had two vending machines side by side, one
with Coke and other carbonated beverages and the other with Lipton Tea,
Hi-C, and other non-carbonated beverages. We were free to buy the
carbonated beverages before and after school, but not at lunch. At lunch
they actually locked up the carbonated machine and we would pry apart the
chain link and buy Coke and security would actually confiscate it from us!
Nevermind that Lipton Tea and Hi-C had just as much sugar, apparently they
were "healthier" because they were non-carbonated. But of course they
were not required to sell either type of beverage, they could have allowed
only orange juice to be sold in the cafeteria. As you might expect, the
rule quickly changed as Coke "persuaded" local school boards to allow
their beverage to be sold at lunch ($$$).
