Besides, the schools are still segregated.
For example, last year I taught at a school that had 27% white kids.
I never saw a single one of them. The reason? They were all over on
the "magnet wing" of the building, where those of us on the "regular"
side never saw them. They did not have PE with the neighborhood kids,
they did not eat with the neighborhood kids, they did not talk with
the neighborhood kids, they did not develop friendships with the
neighborhood kids... all they did was ride their cushy busses from
some suburban paradise to a school in the inner city where they were
promptly isolated from "those animals" (i.e. the kids I was teaching,
in the opinion of their parents).
That's how it works nowdays even when schools officially ARE
"desegregated". You have INTERNAL segregation. When I was attending a
mid-city school that was officially 50% black, I had not a single
black face in any of my classes, because I was in the "high track" and
all the blacks were in the "low track". When I was attending a semi-rural
school that was about 25% black, again, I had not a single black face in
any of my classes. This is NOT the way for kids to develop friendships,
romances, etc. between races.
