What makes you so certain it's worse? You can't get a coherent
picture from the news media.

I've lived in some of D.C.'s least desirable neighborhoods
since 1976. Burglary is the only thing I worry about, and I
probably have less reason to worry about it than somebody
living in a tonier section of D.C. such as Georgetown where
there are more goodies to steal. I've dated quite a few women
who, while they were mildly dubious about the idea of living
in a place such as =my= Northeast neighborhood, have no fears
about living alone in their present quarters in the
Georgetown, Capitol Hill, or Dupont Circle neighborhoods. They
have had no exciting crime stories to tell, either.

Somebody posted remarks to dc.general recently that confirm my
personal experience of no trend toward more violence in most
of D.C. He was a member of some neighborhood group and had
access to police statistics for his neighborhood. He pointed
out that the murders that got all the publicity for D.C. were
confined to a very few small areas where the drug trade is,
and that without them, the rest of the city had a rate that
was no higher than any other city of comparable size.
