I think the general problem just now is that national categories are mixed with individuals. I recognize your views concerning South Africa where we are on the same line. Maybe I recognize your views less concerning the Iraqi affair, but there, on the other hand, Mr Kohl has now moved in line, even if he was dragging his feet a little too long for the taste of the opinion of the West. And I think Germany has done enough just now paying for the campaign, Israel, the EC, the Russians for leaving eastern Germany, etc. Few European nations are so generous. And I think that this should be recognized, also in the U.S. by people like John D. Mathon. Then there is this general problem of Europe and the U.S. which you touched mentioning de Gaulle in a previous mail. It is sad that there is no stronger political force of Western Europe, that could now tackle the problems of the Balkans, Eastern Europe, the Baltic states and the problems in the Soviet Union. We will probably also here be in the hands of the U.S., even if those problems, for geostrategic reasons, concern us more than the U.S. Regards, jo
