East of the Mississippi, yes, because everything is so close
together. You hunt deer with a shotgun to reduce the risk of
injuries.
Buckshot loads are both typical for hunting deer, and for
very short range self-defense. You can expect lethal injuries
with buckshot loads to 100 yards, and I wouldn't discount
the possibility of death to 150-200 yards.
Remember that a deer and a person are somewhat similiar in
requirements for lethal wounding. A distance of 100 yards
for shotgun deer is sort of the outside limit to expect
a humane kill.
