The result of the Indian governments' expulsion of all foreign press from Kashmir has been nothing short of a success from an Indian point of view. There are no checks on their biased and blatantly wrong reporting, and it is taken as given that whatever comes out of India's press reports on Kashmir is true. Unfortunately, that is the farthest thing from the truth. Journalists who have made it to Kashmir and back alive have done so covertly and without and aid from the government of India. Even with the present conditions in the Occupied Lands and that of Bosnia, the press seems to function properly. It is a disgrace to peoples of all civilized lands that the world's so - called "largest democracy" is allowed to engage in such criminal and dastardly behavior as to the extent in Kashmir. When did democracies start banning foreign journalists? And when did they also put the squeeze on electronic media? It is the misfortune of those innocent Kashmiris being slaughtered that the rest of the world is ignorant of their plight. It should be the duty of all those associated with the press to band together and bring some force on the government of India to allow open and unbiased reporting, along with access to the innocents who are suffering daily. Edward Gargan's recent piece in the New York Times' Sunday Magazine was a brilliant depiction of the current situation. Unfortunately, not much attention can be gained from a piece that is not on the front pages every day. Let us hope that in the future the press will aid the struggle in Kashmir by reporting to the world the whole story of the Kashmiri Freedom Movement. Sareer A. Fazili
