From the September 13th issue of New Statesman,

"The HGP [Human Genome Project] now engages scientific communities
throughout the developed world, not least here in the UK, where Sir
Walter Bodmer, of the financially well-endowed Imperial Cancer
Research Fund, plays a lead role.
... We can get a measure of the profit-lust inherent in the HGP
from an admission, by Bodmer himself, to the recent annual meeting of
the British Association for the Advancement of Science. American
researchers taking part in the project to map the human genome, Bodmer
revealed, were spending twice as much of the federally provided
budgets seeking to patent their discoveries for future profit-taking
than on actual mapping activity."

Is this true?

Any futher details?
