How about:
Copyright (C) 1992 Qiang Alex Zhao
Original code
Copyright (C) 1988 Dr. X Y Z
Permission is granted to modify and re-distribute this code in
any manner as long as this notice is preserved. All standard
disclaimers apply.
Or perhaps with "Original code" replace by "some code".
But perhaps you could reconsider; as it stands, you could put a virus in
the code, and the original author could get the credit(?). My guess is
that copyright notice is probably as valid as the GPV(L), so you would
probably be better off working from scratch.
