Monday's San Joe Mercury News has a list of the top 150 companies in
Silicon Valley. As Santa Clara county (or the San Jose SMSA) [or the lower
Bay Area in general] leads in some sort of patent per capita count, I
thought I would match up the Merc list with the corresponding patent counts.
For each company below, I list the company, the 1995 annual sales, and the
1970-1995 total patent counts.
Two institutions not on the Merc's list, but in the Valley, have large
patent counts, so I list them first (Stanford and EPRI). Other than that
the big companies have lots of patents, I am not sure if there is much of
a correlation between annual sales and patent counts. The Merc published
other financial data for each company where there may be correlations, but
I will let some Stanford business student do the study.
The numbers are not exact (within plus or minus a few patents), as
those of you who have ever waded through the ASSIGNEE name section of APS
will sympathize with.
I am thinking of assembling a database for sale that would list each of
the following companies, the titles of patents they hold, the law firm they
used to prosecute the patent, plus my commentary on what it all means. I
will probably charge some outrageous lawyer-level price for the compilation.
