Useful Information Vs. SPAM

I recently received an email from a newsgroup reader who also happens
to live here in Omaha (the home of Warren Buffet, along with us lesser
mortals). He wanted to let me know that a SPAM alert had been posted
regarding the @Close Market Summary postings I have made over the past
month or so.

Being continually subjected to a deluge of several hundred spam emails
a day wanting to increase the size of my personal debt or various body
parts, I am just as sensitive to the issue of spam as the next guy. I
can usually tell when a message is just more useless marketing drivel
or something that might actually be of some value to me, which in my
view, takes it outside the spam category.

So, I guess I am confused about what constitutes spam. When I post
the @Close Market Summary, I am not posting the efforts of a bunch of
advertising flakes, but of a team of professional market news editors
who provide the identical information to some 150,000 paid DTN
subscribers. The only difference is, they get the information a day
before I post it to the newsgroups, which is only fair.

However, I don't want to jeopardize the reputation of our publications
with the label of SPAM, so I will indefinitely cease posting @Close to
this or any related newsgroups.

If you would like to receive @Close by email instead, you can do so by

Spamming is good way for entities with limited resources to reach thousands
of potential customers. It reflects the true essence of why the internet
was created. That is everyone has equal access. Your or I would have the
same access to millions of potential customers as the "big guys" do. Notice
that when you get a email from a large company it is NOT considered spam.
Keep sending your emails. If we get rid of what Joe Blow believes as "bad"
spam then you get rid of what I might think as good spam. This whole idea
of SPAM is a tempest in a teapot. The delete key works very well on my
computer and doesn't cost me a cent!!!!

Thanks,
    Bob

Or, if you ever worked for Uncle Sam, you might have one of these, from
which you can pick up his DNS numbers that will take you right down to which
bedroom he posts from. Then, you can either report him, killfile him, or
divert millions and millions and millions of messages back to his DNS
thereby doing one hell of a denial of service job on him.
