I work with a MAC and I have always own an IBM. My reccommendation: Both machines have virtually the same abilities. However, the MAC, IMHO, is the easier format for younger children. That is why I highly support it for the primary and elementary levels. And with the hybrid CDroms that have increased by leaps and bounds. You have the equal choice of software for both OSs. Besides with the way technology grows. As your child gets older you may wish to upgrade, then switch to an IBM. I feel its worth knowing both systems. It's all personal opinion and nothing more.
