I have two things to say.  First, this is a religious issue.  Brace
yourself for evangelical responses from both camps.  Second, we're talking
about spending several thousand dollars.  You wouldn't buy a car or
anything else for several thousand dollars without trying it out.  Try out
the computers.  Sit down, spend a half hour with each and decide which
fits your needs.  Keep the salespeople away, don't listen to anything of
any kind under any circumstances that they say to you (you may have more
luck at a college bookstore or, better, computer lab than another
commercial outlet).  Just spend some time on each system doing what you
think you'll be doing with it.

And then buy the mac (my religious preference; YMMV).
