If you didn't then: Poverty is defined based on income. Right now it's something like 18K for a family of 4. If you don't count the unemployed (who as a rule have _really_ low incomes) then the poverty values get really skewed. And in case you did then: Unemployment counts people getting unemployment benefits. You don't get umemployment if you are fired for cause, but you do if you are laid off. When you get laid off, your job is gone. If you qualify for unemployment, you are by definition below the poverty line. But the problem is not simply the number of jobs, but the quality of jobs. If you were working in a manufacturing job getting say $12 an hour then you and your wife and 2 kids are above the poverty line. Most of the jobs that are available are not manufacturing jobs and pay rather less, say $8 an hour. Now you're below the poverty line. Of course this is a contrived example. Most families can't make it on one income anymore.
