CRA’s YouTube Gambit Garners 22,000 Tattling Tips :CRA SOTW You might remember this Tax Tale from way back in February of this year: http://groups.google.com/group/can.taxes/browse_thread/thread/5c5c9c6935f561e8/4e24651c39dbdcc6?q= WELL, here’s the response, OTTAWA — The Canada Revenue Agency received 22,000 tips from Canadians tattletaling on their neighbours last year. National Revenue Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn said calls are coming in through a national hotline, known as the Informant Leads Program (http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/gncy/nvstgtns/lds-eng.html), established a few years ago. “People call and denounce companies or individuals who appear to be fraudulent or don’t appear to pay their share of income tax,” Blackburn said. “Every time someone denounces someone else, our ministry verifies to see whether the accusations are truthful.” Monday, the federal government said it is enlisting the help of young filmmakers to encourage Canadians to pay their taxes. The agency announced the winners of its YouTube video contest on the underground economy. Blackburn said the problem is serious and people are only running after trouble if they think they can get away without paying their fair share. When your neighbours boast they don’t pay taxes, they are hurting you, the minister said. “If projected revenues don’t come in, the government will have to raise income taxes the following year,” he said. But the winners of the YouTube contest don’t want viewers to get the impression they are being encouraging to rat out anyone. “It’s about your guilty conscience,” said 24-year-old Simon Lavictoire of Saint-Georges, Quebec. Toronto’s David Hall, 24, agreed and said the video he and his friends produced is about “self-awareness.” Their video reminds viewers their taxes fund child care, pensions and parks. It will be used by the Canada Revenue Agency in its promotional material. ----------------------------------------------------------- Miss a Tax Tale Miss a lot!
