Folklore researcher seeks chain letters, old or new, but especially the "prayer" or "good luck" type on letters or postcard, and dateable by a postmark. I have over 225 prayer chain letters going back to the turn of the century and before. But there are sparse periods, such as 1930-1970. I will pay for dateable letters in this period, as high as $25. Even a currently circulating good/bad luck letter could be useful, and if you send one to the address below, in its original envelope, I will send you back and extra stamp, and you will get a credit in my data base. Foreign letters, clippings, recollections are also useful. Does anyone know someone who has tried to write a chain letter, or added or changed an existing one? What about stories about actual good or bad luck? Or stories about getting unexpected money in the mail, especially family legends from the early 1930's??? I also collect frequently forwarded E-mail, so don't be embarrassed to forward my your "junk" E-mail. But I do have an adequate sample already of commercial scams/spams.
