I would like to add that increasingly, libraries are permitting remote access
to their computerized catalogs, via modem -- the Sunnyvale (CA) Public Library
is one such critter. Here, I can perform a limited number of commands (search
by title, author, subject; display entries, # of copies), but cannot (yet)
reserve books or access inter-library databases.

How about others? Also, does anyone know of online, ASCII-format collections
available for browsing/ftp/etc. over the Internet?

I know, for example, that one can ftp to ftp.uu.net and find a lot of
interesting stuff in the /docs directory...
