One rule of thumb I like (and I don't remember how I came to abide by it) is to never show a rough draft to anyone. Something about too many opinions too early on.... Also, I try to get something on paper--WHATEVER it may be-- WHENEVER I feel motivated. Thus the value of keeping a journal. Finally,if I don't feel motivated , I type up some of those old handwritten scraps (does anyone uses a pen and paper anymore?). I've found that I end up doing a lot of revision/rewriting under the guise of typing mindlessly.
